300 BLK pairs a large-caliber bullet with a smaller casing. 30-caliber cartridge was based on the popular 5.56mm NATO, a standard military round, but delivers a similar performance to the larger 7.62mm NATO, also a standard military load. One of the most popular and effective loads is 300 blackout subsonic. Therefore, subsonic loads are designed to strike the right balance of velocity and bullet weight. To do that, ammo makers design the round to travel at velocities below the speed of sound, which creates another problem altogether.
Subsonic ammunition crack#
The goal when designing a subsonic round is to reduce the noise of the initial crack caused by expelling gases. Send an email to for more information or personal assistance.The benefit of using subsonic ammo is that it's quieter than standard ammunition and makes suppressed fire even more effective, but going subsonic poses a number of challenges for manufacturers.For standard bolt action cartridges, case modifications are not required for subsonic application.Start with 10-20% more propellant than the suggested loads below to prevent bullets getting stuck in the barrel.Final loads may vary even for identical rifles types. Start load development with target distances between 25 to 50m.For fast twist barrels or muzzle velocities exceeding 1050fps the petals may open prematurely causing damage to attached devices/instruments. Start load development without silencers or velocity instruments connected to the barrel until the bullet exits inside specified velocities.Recommended muzzle exit velocities are from 800 fps to 1050fps for Peregrine subsonic bullets.Fillet materials should be loosely packed to ensure complete combustion. Use filler material to ensure the propellant/powder always cover and/or remain in contact with the primer.This can clog up the case neck area inside the rifle chamber. Slower burning powders tend to leave a soot residue in the chamber and barrel.
Pistol powders are generally better than slower burning powders.Always double check if the last bullet has left the barrel until a very reliable load is established.Always start with marginally higher loads than the desired subsonic velocity to prevent bullets from getting stuck in the barrel.Please note for supersonic loads case fill may never be less than 80% !!! If case fill with SS loads is less than 70%, a filler material will help to improve the consistency in muzzle velocity. The purpose of the filler material is to keep the powder close to the primer. Any good quality fine 100% cotton wool can be used. If the cartridge volume is even bigger such as with the 30-06 cartridge it may be even more difficult to find consistent loads.įiller Materials: Best practice is to use filler materials to compensate for excess case volume. In such a case either a very small amount of propellant is required or a much slower burning speed powder may be used. The 308 Win is a good example, however the case volume far exceeds the space required to propel a bullet to subsonic velocities. Fortunately it is also possible to create subsonic bullets and loads for existing rifle types that have been around for many decades. Smaller cartridge volumes are ideal for subsonic bullet application as pointed out above. As a bullet manufacturer we are mostly concerned with selecting the correct bullet for a given twist barrel. Rifle manufacturers consider many factors other than bullet weight in deciding a barrel twist. Heavier bullets require a faster twist hence the popular twist for 300 AAC Blackout is 1:8 and may be as fast as 1:5. In general it is ideal for a subsonic bullet to carry more weight in order to regain some of the lost kinetic energy due to the very low velocity.

Over time more speciality type rifles may appear. One example is the well known 300 AAC Blackout cartridge available in AR15 type configuration, in bolt action and also as a single shot rifle. Rifles that were specially created for subsonic bullet application contributed hugely to the sudden popularity. In recent times the popularity of Subsonic bullets increased dramatically.
